Integrative Endocrinology

Integrative endocrinology is the treatment of hormonal disorders using alternative therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy or gland cell therapy in conjunction with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey specializes in integrative endocrinology remedies which applies one or more non-traditional treatment methods to patients seeking relief from health issues associated with low hormonal levels, specifically estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Integrative Endocrinology Versus Hormone Replacement Therapy

While traditional hormone replacement therapy involves raising insufficient hormone levels with synthetic hormones via injection or pill supplements, integrative endocrinology chooses to replenish low amounts of hormones by naturally stimulating release of hormones.

Benefits of Integrative Endocrinology

Patients electing integrative endocrinology treatments are not subjected to the health risks posed by using synthetic hormones. Over the past 20 years, new research into the long-term effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has revealed that potentially serious health complications can occur as a result of ingesting synthetic estrogen, progesterone and androgens (specifically testosterone). Older men and women suffering symptoms of andropause and menopause, respectively, may experience the following medical issues due to taking synthetic hormones:

    • Elevated cholesterol
    • Heart disease
    • Increased risk of breast, lung, prostate and ovarian cancer
    • Formation of blood clots that can lead to stroke
    • High blood pressure
    • Cognitive issues related to memory and concentration

In addition to popular alternative treatments supporting integrative endocrinology, Armonk Integrative Medicine also emphasizes the importance of engaging in a healthy lifestyle. Eating the right combinations of protein, fruits, and vegetables, along with getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and keeping stress to a minimum are strongly recommended by Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey.

Homeopathy and Hormone Replacement Treatment

Homepathy is an alternative form of medicine that treats various diseases and disorders by giving the patient minute amounts of a substance that would normally cause symptoms of the disease that is being treated if provided in large amounts.

Based on the idea that the body can heal itself (or “like cures like”), homeopathy has been universally practiced for over 400 years. Its philosophy considers the proposition that symptoms of a disorder are simply normal and expected responses by the body as it struggle to regain internal homeostasis and health.

In addition to using bio-identical hormones, Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey also uses various herbs and other natural substances such as ginseng, sepia, or Glycyrrhiza Glabra (a plant with roots that are used to make licorice)

Herbal Medicine and Integrative Endocrinology

Clinical evidence exists that shows particular herbs may help alleviate menopause and andropause symptoms when used in combination with bio-identical hormones. Some plant compounds are known to ease the hot flashes, mood swings, nervousness and fatigue caused by lack of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

For example, the roots of the widely used herbs ginseng and dong quai contain rich amounts of plant-based hormones that are frequently prescribed by homeopathic and herbal practitioners to quell the often debilitating effects of deficient hormone levels. Other popular herbs used to support bio-identical hormone therapy are black cohosh, chickweed and dandelion.

With information about the potentially harmful effects of synthetic hormones emerging rapidly from controlled clinical research studies, Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey has opted for more effective and much safer methods of replacing hormones that can greatly improve overall the health and well-being of both men and women.
