Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is the replacement of certain endogenous hormones– specifically estrogen, progesterone and steroid hormones like testosterone–in individuals who experience lower than normal levels as a result of the aging process. When most people enter their 40s, changes in the endocrine system induce age-related changes that are controlled by the natural decline of hormones. These conditions are known as perimenopause, menopause and male andropause.

Made from plant-based ingredients, bio-identical hormones are literally identical to the hormones manufactured by the body. Because they are not synthetic, they readily adapt to our body’s physiological processes due to possessing the same molecular structures as estrogen, progesterone and androgen.

In both men and women, decreasing levels of estrogen, progesterone and androgen commonly produce these classic symptoms attributed to aging:

  • Weight gain (especially around the abdomen
  • Hair loss or thinning Loss of libido
  • Depression and moodiness
  • Lack of energy
  • Insomnia
  • Cognitive problems (inability to concentrate, “fuzzy” thinking, forgetfulness)
At Armonk Integrative Medicine we provide bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for patients to experience relief from symptoms associated with menopause and andropause without suffering the potentially dangerous side effects often caused by synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

Benefits of Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Women entering perimenopause and menopause experience declining production of estrogen and progesterone, two hormones vital to the ability for women to become pregnant and carry a child to term. However, these hormones also influence the overall health of older women, particularly in regards to preventing osteoporosis, relieving hot flashes and mood swings of menopause and potentially reducing the risk of developing colorectal cancer, high cholesterol and heart disease.

Some women suffer other health problems as they encounter the ups and downs of menopause that can also be assuaged by bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Painful joints, high blood pressure, headaches, excessively dry skin and fatigue are just a few of the issues caused by menopause that bio-identical hormone replacement treatments can help reduce or eliminate altogether.

What is Andropause?

Andropause is another term for male menopause, or the time when testosterone production starts to decrease in men who are over 40. Certain health issues may cause men to experience premature andropause (occurring before age 40), such as hypertension, diabetes or genetic disorders associated with hypogonadism (Wilson-Turner, Klinefelter’s and other androgen insensitivity disorders).

Symptoms of low testosterone may include:

  • Sexual dysfunction (loss of interest in sex, problems attaining an erection)
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of stamina and energy
  • Premature hair loss
  • Behavioral/psychological changes (especially depression)
  • Memory and concentration issues

Men with abnormally low testosterone levels may also experience an increased risk in developing heart disease, osteoporosis or suffering a stroke. Essentially, lacking sufficient amounts of testosterone affects men in the same way a lack of estrogen affects women.

Risks of Synthetic Hormone Replacements

The reason why bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is gaining popularity over traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is that it does not produce the long-term side effects that HRT causes in both men and women. Some of the more well-known complications associated with synthetic HRT include:

    • Increases the chance of developing breast, ovarian, endometrial or prostate cancer
    • May generate blood clots that could lead to stroke (venous thromboembolism)
    • Breast pain
    • Risk of experiencing gallbladder disease
    • Fluid retention that may exacerbate hypertension or heart disease

Bio-identical hormones, unlike synthetic hormones, correspond exactly to the molecular composition of the hormones made by the body. Alongside Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey, it is common that a compounding pharmacist will tailor a regimen of bio-identical hormones that have been specifically formulated to accommodate any individual’s hormonal requirements. Based on a simple saliva or blood test, Dr. Tania Tyles Dempsey is able to analyze any individual’s bio-identical hormone components and effectively prescribe the proper medication or supplement to help treat the symptoms/complications without putting them through the potentially dangerous side effects often caused by synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

In addition to the known risks of using synthetic hormones, a growing body of evidence culled from clinical research concerning bio-identical hormones consistently shows that men and women experience much improved and long-lasting physical and mental health as a result of choosing bio-identical hormone replacement therapy over the risks and dangers of traditional HRT.
